5 Ways to Celebrate National Wine Day!
Did you know that there’s an actual designated day to celebrate wine? Of course, we celebrate every day, but we also don’t need any excuse to drink wine either! Let’s get into the top 5 ways you can celebrate National Wine Day this year (or every day, whatever’s your fancy!).
Well it's already the afternoon and we don’t want to keep you waiting (or thirsty!), so let’s dive right in!
support your local winery.
With nearly 100 wineries located across the state, odds are there is a winery within driving distance that is open today. Don’t feel like stopping in? Many wineries ship directly to your house, so while you wouldn’t receive it today, you’d be guaranteed a delivery of unique and delicious Iowa wine by this weekend, just in time for any Memorial Day get-togethers! To find a winery near you, check out our map of the wineries across the state here.
already have wine? Great! invite some friends over for an informal wine tasting party.
Wine tasting doesn’t have to be complicated - in fact, we always say that the best wines are the ones you prefer. In an article on wine tasting in The Gazette, the 2022 Winemaker of the Year recipient Kent Foulker, said, “One of the first guidelines of wine tasting is that there are no rules, he said — just suggestions.” While we wholeheartedly agree with him, we can also provide you with some tips and information to host a wine tasting party successfully. Check out our No Nonsense Guide to Wine Tasting for information on setting up your wine tasting party, the “5 S’s” and even a free download!
3. join a wine club.
Many Iowa wineries have amazing wine clubs with fantastic benefits for members! If you’re not familiar with how a wine club (or sometimes called a case club) works, each winery does it a little different, but typically there is little to no cost to join and you are able to purchase a set amount of wines on a regular basis at a discounted price. Many will prepare your wine to pick up at the winery or even ship it directly to you. Oftentimes wineries will also share important information and announcements with their wine club members first before the general public. Check out Wide River Winery’s wine club, where you can specify whether you like dry or sweet wine and they’ll tailor your wines to your preference, or Soldier Creek Winery’s Paragon Wine Club, which gives you the option between dry or sweet (or both!) or a winemaker’s choice of wine selection! Contact your favorite winery to inquire about signing up for their customer loyalty program, case club or wine club today.
4. GIVE THE GIFT OF WINE
Is there a wine lover in your life? Purchase a bottle of wine to give to them. Today’s the perfect day to treat them to a fun surprise, because odds are they already know it’s National Wine Day and already have plans to celebrate this evening! Bonus points for picking up some local meats, cheeses or even chocolates to pair nicely with their wine. You could even surprise them with a gift card to a wine retailer who can help them find their favorite wine, or even discover a new favorite wine. We would recommend The Wijn House in Pella or Wines of Iowa in Valley Junction.
5. raise a glass and celebrate national wine day (or just because you made it through the day).
We saved the very best idea for last - whether you like dry, sweet, red, white or rosé wines - sit back, relax and enjoy a glass of Iowa wine on National Wine Day.
